Yesterday the BuddyPress team released BuddyPress 2.0, a major and welcomed update. All recent versions of our super mobile BuddyBoss theme work well with BuddyPress 2.0. Ok, let’s dive in and learn about the improvements!
New Admin Tools
Admin Profile Editing
I have been waiting to see this for a long time. Let’s say you have a user on your site, and you want to update his or her profile information. Maybe they have a typo, offensive language, or they’re just confused and asking you to help them. Now you can do it right from the admin!
Spam User Management
I would still like to see better spam prevention built into BuddyPress, but at least you now have the ability to mark users as spammers from the admin.
Activate Pending Users
This is a wonderful improvement! Sometimes when a user signs up to your site, for a variety of reasons they may never get their activation link sent to them. Now you can log into the admin and resend (email) their activation link, manually activate them, or even delete their not-yet-activated account. A lot of spambot signups never activate, so this actually a good method to remove fake signups.
Repair BuddyPress
A while back the bbPress forum software introduced admin repair tools. Over the course of time, sometimes parts of your database can get out of sync and need to be repaired. Seeing that bbPress and BuddyPress have the same core developer, it was only a matter of time before we’d see repair tools making their way into BuddyPress. Just go to Tools > BuddyPress to access them.
Better Performance
BuddyPress can sometimes slow down when you have a lot of users querying the database at the same time. This is why I’m giving a talk at the upcoming WordCamp Miami about how to scale BuddyPress. Luckily for all of us, the BuddyPress team claims to have streamlined some of the most common problematic queries – including those in the Members and Activity directories – to reduce up to 95% of the query time on certain occasions. The total amount of queries has been reduced as well, with single page views querying the database up to 50% less than in previous versions. These changes don’t matter so much if you only have a handful of users, but if you have hundreds or even thousands hitting the database simultaneously the page load time should be noticeably better. See the developer docs for detailed information.
Thanks to the BuddyPress team for delivering another awesome release!
